Downtown Camp Verde Celebrates Pecan Harvest & Vineyards February 13-15
(Phoenix, January 12, 2004) February is pecan harvest season in Arizona and its time again to join the town of Camp Verde for the Fourth Annual Camp Verde Pecan & Wine Festival on February 13, 14, and 15. The event promises numerous activities sure to tickle the taste buds of the entire family and provide a window into the lifestyles of the Camp Verde residents in the late 1800's.
The festival’s pecan bakeoff looks for the finest appearance, texture and flavor of the delicate treats and local pecan growers will have their pecans judged for quality and size. Antique dealers offer historic wares for sale and trade, local musicians provide jazz music, and others demonstrate wool spinning, and blacksmithing. Fresh baked pecan pie available by the piece or you can purchase a pie to take home. Fort Verde State Historic Park, the historic centerpiece of the town, was once home to officers, doctors, families, enlisted men, and Indian Scouts.
Today’s visitors, for a $3 entrance fee, can view the Commanding Officer’s Quarters, Bachelors' Quarters and Doctor’s Quarters on Officer's row, all furnished in the 1880s period. Interpretive exhibits display artifacts on Victorian era military life, military equipment and lifestyles of Camp Verde's residents in the late 1800's. One of the exciting features of the Pecan & Wine Festival is the wine tasting, which provides an excellent opportunity for visitors to learn about Arizona wineries and the many local produced fine wines available. Winery representatives from Sonoita, Bowie, Tempe, and Camp Verde showcase many vintages including a specialty wine called Pecan Delight from Fort Bowie Vineyards and Orchards Products, south of Tucson. Pecan Delight is a sparkling wine with a slight pecan after taste. Exhibits on the culture of pecans and grapes crown the event and the pecan and wine offerings stay tantalizing all day. In addition, the Camp Verde Pecan & Wine festival promises to an educational adventure with Michael Kilby, University of Arizona fruit and nut specialist and Jeff Schalua of the Yavapai County Cooperative Extension holding informative seminars on the pruning and care of pecan tress and grapevines.
The Pecan & Wine festival opens on Friday, February 13, from noon to 5:00 pm, Saturday February 14 from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and Sunday February 15 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. Entrance into the festival is $6, which includes a souvenir wineglass and six tasting tickets or $3 without wine tasting. Mark your calendar and join the town of Camp Verde Parks and Recreation Department, the Chamber of Commerce, and Fort Verde State Historic Park to celebrate Arizona's two most popular agricultural products -- Pecans and grapes!
