PROFILE WRITING: CREATING CHARACTER IN A PROFILE
A profile provides an intimate view of a person or business by exploring who the subject is with the intent of conveying what is most interesting about the subject.
The profile must look at the subject's chronology and answer questions about who, what, when and where and how with the intention of enlightening the reader about how those elements influenced the subject of the profile.
Who are the people that influenced the subject's life direction? Were the parents influential in the person’s character development? Or was there a teacher or professional mentor who made an unusual impact on the subject? What element of the subject is unusual in what they do or how they express themselves?
What influences have different cultures had on the subject? What specific incident in the subject’s education or professional development produced a profound influence?
When did the subject make a pivotal life decision and why?
Where do they live and how did their community influence their lives? Is their environment visually distinctive? Does it coincide with the subject’s character or refute it?
To write an effective profile, the writer needs to present the facts honestly. The structure of a profile has to include the history or facts about the subject; however, the profile needs to encompass more than a bulleted listed of achievements like a job history; a personal profile is about life, emotions and desire. Everyone has a unique life story and to make that story interesting for the readers, the writer must descriptively convey the essence of the subject on paper.
To write a successful profile, the writer must look at the chronology of the subject and the character development inspired by those experiences to give the subject an emotion appeal. One of the most important things a writer wants to presents is a sense of the person or business’ values and ethics.
